Tohoku University has a long history and was founded in 1907 as the third National University of Japan. Since then, we have been proud of our academic spirits: “Research First”, “Open Door” and “Practice-Oriented Research and Education”. In June 2017, Tohoku University received confirmation of its new status with the Designated National University title from the Japanese Government along with the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University. This is recognition of the university’s abilities to lead and shape global education and research. The new status provides the university with a better platform to further contribution to society, and we will have the means to further internationalize our education, reinforce our research capabilities and push ahead with structural reforms to make us even more competitive.
Our school of pharmaceutical education also has a long history since the establishment of the Pharmaceutical Institute of Tohoku University in 1957. The new system of our graduate school started as the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1999, which now consists of three majors: Molecular Pharmaceutical Science, Life and Pharmaceutical Science, and Pharmacy.
Currently, we have 20 research groups teaching and conducting research at three core divisions, and each group consists of biologists, physical chemists, organic chemists, medicinal chemists and clinical scientists. Independent research projects or collaborative projects are conducted within the groups as well as with researchers at other institutions and companies.
As I mentioned above, Tohoku University is proud to be known as one of the nation’s leading national research universities, acknowledged for its teaching and learning excellence and international reputation for research and artistry, and public service at home and abroad. International students willing to devote themselves to research at our Graduate School for highly specialized knowledge and developing the ability of conducting research are highly welcome. The aim of Doctorate course proposed for international students is educating them for becoming an independent researcher with an excellent ability to participate in research in the field of global pharmaceutical sciences.
